Navigating Recovery: Finding Comfort After TURP Surgery

Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP) is a minimally invasive procedure to remove or minimise the excess prostate tissue to alleviate frequent urination and difficulty in voiding the bladder and to restore normal urine flow. Dr Aarthy is the leading urologist doctor in Chennai specialised in TURP surgery.

TURP is recommended for men with prostate enlargement or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which is a prevalent condition that affects many men as they age. It often leads to frustrating urinary issues such as frequent trips to the bathroom, weak or interrupted urine flow, and unsatisfactory bladder emptying. When non-intrusive treatments do not deliver the desired results for BHP, Transurethral Resection of the Prostate, or TURP, is the next best option.

Dr. Aarthy, adopts a patient-centered approach to TURP, offering tailored care from diagnosis to post-operative recovery.

Before Surgery

TURP Preparation: What to Do Before Surgery?

Pre-Surgical Assessment

Dr Aarthy might suggest various tests such as blood and urine analysis, electrocardiogram (ECG), and imaging procedures like a cystoscopy to inspect the prostate and evaluate your general health.

Medication Management

Notify Dr Aarthy about your existing medication intake, particularly anti-inflammatory medications, blood thinners, or herbal supplements. She might instruct you to discontinue specific medications a few days before your surgery to minimise the risk of excessive bleeding.

Food Intake Guidelines

Dr Aarthy will advice you to refrain from eating or drinking for approximately 6-8 hours prior to the surgery.

Care Arrangements

Because the procedure usually involves anaesthesia, have someone available to drive you home afterwards. You might also need help for a few days as you recover.

What to Expect?

TURP Procedure: What to Expect?

Anaesthesia

An anaesthetist will administer general anaesthesia to fully render you unconscious or spinal anaesthesia to numb you from the waist down to prepare you for the surgery.

The Process

Dr Aarthy will insert a resectoscope through the urethra instead of making any external incisions to perform the surgery. The surgeon meticulously utilises the resectoscope to excise the excess prostate tissue that is blocking urine flow.

Irrigation

A sterile solution is used to irrigate the area to help clear the site for the surgery and flush away the excised prostate tissues. The removed tissue fragments are further analysed for irregularities. The procedure generally lasts for 60-90 minutes, depending on the prostate size and other complexities.

Catheter Insertion

At the end of the procedure, a slender, flexible tube or catheter is gently inserted into the bladder to drain the urine and clear out any remaining blood clots. Your doctor will recommend keeping the catheter in place for a few days after the procedure to facilitate easy healing.

Recovery Room

Once the procedure is complete, you will be taken to a recovery area where your vital signs will be monitored as the anaesthesia wears off.

Post-Surgical Care

TURP Surgery: Post-Surgical Care

Follow these guidelines to expedite your recovery from Transurethral Resection of the Prostate:

Catheter Care

Expect one or two days of hospital stay after your TURP surgery. During this period, a catheter will be inserted to drain urine from your bladder as the surgical site heals.

Fluid Intake

Maintain adequate hydration by consuming enough fluid intake. It will facilitate bladder cleansing and aid your healing process.

Activity Restrictions

Refrain from engaging in strenuous activities, heavy lifting, and intense exercise for at least 4-6 weeks post-procedure.

Doctor Checkups

Be diligent with your follow-up appointments, and inform Dr Aarthy if you experience fever, pain, or bleeding at the surgical site.

Bladder Training

Do bladder training exercises to restore your bladder control since it can take time for the bladder to acclimatise post-surgery.
